EF-5 in the Desert? - AZ ChaserCon 2014 Presentation

This was the presentation I gave at Arizona ChaserCon 2014, entitled EF5 in the Desert?. In it, I discuss the possibility of Arizona ever seeing an EF-5 tornado. I compare two notable EF-5 tornado events on the Great Plains - the Moore/Bridge Creek EF-5 of May 3, 1999, and the Jarrell, TX, EF-5 of May 27, 1997 - to two of Arizona's most notable tornado events, including the Wintersburg EF-1 during Monsoon 2010 and the historic October 2010 tornado outbreak in Northern Arizona. I analyze the synoptic-scale setup of each event, commenting on both why the Great Plains setups were able to produce EF-5 tornadoes and why the two Arizona setups may have been lacking in their ability to produce EF-5s.
